Returning to fitness after motherhood, I found in Yoga & Strength Training a place for inner peace as well as a way of channelling my inner warrior woman.
With a strong background in movement and nearly a decade dedicated to Middle Eastern, Indian and Spanish dance, I was pleasantly surprised to see the incredible memory that the body holds. I was returning to exercise after 9 years without consistency and dedication.
As a mother, exercising straight after childbirth is a privilege. In my case, it was when my second child started the 3 daily hours government funded childcare at the age of 2 that I finally made a commitment to put myself and my health first. I was still breastfeeding him but ready to stop. I was constantly hungry, had started developing glucose resistance, felt heavy dizziness days before my period, started losing sensation on my index finger... my health really took a toll and it was that rock bottom moment that made me realise my priorities had to change.
I didn't start exercising purely to lose weight. My motivation was and still is being strong and active so that I can keep up wit my two energetic and demanding little boys. The focus was finding one or two types of exercise that I actually enjoy, and not do anything that I didn't enjoy.
I went from 72kg to 69kg in about 6 months, then reached a plateau and felt a bit of frustration about it. But I kept going, reminding myself that weight wasn't really my main goal. I completely stopped tracking my weight, and just kept going and enjoying the process. The next time I weighted myself was about a year later, because I needed to fill up a form for a check up. Then I realised I had lost 10kg, more than I was even aiming for.
Fast forward two years from when I simultaneously started Yoga and Strengh Training... now I am a Qualified Yoga Instructor teaching in different gyms in Kent. My previous life experience teaching dance and other disciplines has definitely been key to hit the ground running.
I am currently doing a Certificate 3 in Personal Training which will consolidate the self learning I have applied at the gym during the past two years. And I hope to be able to help other people improve their life quality, feel energised, strong, capable and empowered within their bodies.
